'Baro' by Habib Koité and Bamada - Wed, Jun. 29, 9pm EDT

If you’re looking for a great album for the summer, Habib Koité and Bamada have just what the doctor ordered.  This third release by the Malian group is a fantastic compliment to relaxing outdoors during long sun-filled summer days.  Don’t be fooled though, once you hear it you’ll realize that this album stands up as a quality record all year round.

This is truly a perfect album to resurrect “Album Night” from its six month hiatus.  Although its genre, “World Music”, often tells you nothing (and can be music just from a single non-USA or European country) this album actually encompasses many influences and styles from around the globe. And why not bring “Album Night” back with a little global inspiration during the season of travel?

Habib Koité was raised in a family of musicians and picked up many of the traditional Malian styles simply via exposure while growing up. But he also studied blues and flamenco which he infuses into those traditional styles. And as a tireless global tourer, his influences and styles are continually expanding. The unique tunings, rhythms and overall vibe of this album are truly what “World Music” should be.  And although Baro was released 15 years ago, it still feels fresh and new every time I listen to it.

So join me on Wednesday, June 29 at 9pm EDT as we usher in a new year of “Album Night” with the first African album of the series!
