Wed, Jan. 28, 9pm EST - 'John Prine' by John Prine

John Prine released his self titled debut in 1971.  Over 40 years and numerous albums later it's still regarded as his best work.  Despite being so young at the time of its release, Kris Kristofferson observes in the liner notes that Prine is "twenty-four years old and writes like he’s about two-hundred and twenty". Regarding seeing Prine perform for the first time ever, Kristofferson also proclaims, "It must’ve been like stumbling onto Dylan when he first busted onto the Village scene".

Kristofferson speaks of the depth of Prine's writing, and when sitting down to listen to this thirteen song LP, it's easily apparent why.  Despite being so young, Prine pens songs with the wisdom of an artist who's walked the earth for decades with countless experiences to draw from.  Yes, the fact that Prine was so young when writing these songs is part of what makes this record so astonishing.  But even if he had had those additional years under his belt at the time, the album would still stand out as an exceptional accomplishment.

Join "Album Night" on Wednesday, January 28 as we dig deeper into the sophisticated and poignant lyrics of John Prine's self-titled debut.

Hi! I loved the Sgt Pepper discussion so much - I just had to come back! I know nothing about John Prine's music - but I'm hear to learn and get everyone's take on it - so I may be a little bit more quiet than last time!

No problem at all. Thanks for returning Regina! This album is definitely a lot different than Sgt Pepper's. More straight forward and lyric based. I guess not surprising considering he's generally considered a 'singer/songwriter'. Definitely take your time to sit back and enjoy the album. No pressure to comment too much. We'll get started in a couple of minutes

First time I heard this album was about an hour ago. Initial reaction.,,.,,,,,,,,,Bob Dylan. Heard a few songs and turned it off. Then I kinda missed it. So I put it on. Not the type of music I typically listen , but I must say in a strange way it starts to grow on you.

Thanks for coming back Louis. This will be a good chance for you to get exposed to some classic John Prine. Maybe you'll love him or maybe you won't. Either way you'll get a chance to listen to a new artist. It's one of the great things about "Album Night"!

I'm generally not into country, but I like this one despite the country-esque feel to it. I understand what you're saying though with it having some catchy numbers with good hooks. I'm following along with the lyrics too, which I think he's pretty good at crafting Lyrics for the album (links on left side of page) http://www.jpshrine.org/lyrics/liner/notes_jp.htm

Being a musician, or at least a former one, I tend to focus on chords, transitions, harmony, bass lines, and in many respects that's why this type of music doesnt generally attract me. Though I do like the slide guitar and fiddle.

Well, I'd have to say that every time the featured album ends, I always think it was too short. I suppose that's the sign of a good album. It should leave you wanting more. I know I'll be going back for another listen. I always listen much more closely during "Album Night" and discover things I hadn't picked up on in previous spins.

Great question Regina and Sarah. We'll be making a bit of a departure from the mainstream when "Album Night" returns on Feb 11 at 9pm with 'Desertshore' by Nico. If you're not already familiar with Nico, brace yourself! It's going to be a different listening experience. But that's what keeps it interesting, right? The album is produced and arranged by John Cale, so he lends some credibility to the project
