Wed, Sep. 17, 9pm EDT - 'Moon Safari' by Air

If it were possible for an album to make a listener float through the sky like a hot air balloon, I think Moon Safari would be the album to make it happen.

This 1998 release by Air is phenomenal.  After listening to the album you know the band's name could be nothing other than what it is.  The duo of Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel really indulges your senses and captures your imagination as you slowly float across a dreamy landscape of sound.  Anyone for safari? Trip to the moon? How 'bout both?

Moon Safari + Wed, Sep 17, 9pm EDT =  "Album Night"

See you then!

Thanks for the lyrics link John. I like following along with the music. I picked up the cd at the local library and am eager to see what it has to offer. I haven't listened yet. Wanted to wait for tonight!

Hard to believe this came out in 1998. It sounds like it could have been recorded yesterday. The music is hypnotic.

Yeah, kind of amazing what two french guys could pull off in a studio. Hard to believe it's been out more than 15 years already. You're right though, it doesn't feel like it's something you would think of coming out of the 90's

How many are in the group? Listening to All I Need - is the lead female a guest or a member of the group?

Thanks for clarifying John. I find the vocal on All I Need a nice change of pace from the opening tracks.

Beth Hirsch was the guest vocalist. Other than that Nicolas Godin and Jean Benoit did all the rest from what I understand

Apparently leaving in her lip licking or whatever it was between her vocal phrases was intentional. Makes for an interesting effect. Guessing they did it for the intimate feeling

I was almost tempted to categorize this as New Age but it is more than just background music. It keeps on drawing you in - especially the sustained beat of Kelly Watch the Stars. Even though it sounds the same there is enough diversity in the songs to keep your attention.

This is definitely the sort of album that would be blasting in an empty common room at a Suny Purchase apt in the mid-late 90s.

I agree with all the comments. The flow of the album is so seamless it's hard to notice the breaks between the tracks. I have to admit it has put me in a very mellow mood.

John, I hear what you're saying. There are definitely certain elements in common throughout many of the songs, but yet they seem to experiment with something different every track. "You Make It Easy" probably sounds the most like what I would consider a more mainstream song. But still brilliant and fits within the context of the record for sure

Yes, having Beth singing on two songs really has added to the texture and overall feel of the album. But then Ce Matin-La comes on and you forget about the vocals because the melody is so gorgeous. I think the second side might be better than the first at least so far.

John T, I have a couple of their other albums: 10,000 Hz Legend and Talkie Walkie. Of the two I like 10,000 Hz Legend better, but I think overall Moon Safari is the best overall album. 10,000 Hz Legend does have some really great songs though, I just don't think on average the songs are as good. Beck is on a song or two on that album too. If you liked Moon Safari, I think '10,000 Hz Legend' is worth checking out for sure

this was the first time I ever listened to Air so I can't comment on any of their other albums. I enjoyed listening to something different but I would say that I prefer some of the previous albums we've done. Good to mix it up though and I'm glad I got a chance to expand my horizons a bit, on a Moon Safari no less!
