“I may not believe in God, but I’ll say a little prayer for America.”; the opening lines that set the tone of Fred Gillen Jr’s latest album, What She Said.  Gillen Jr has now been releasing albums for 20 years. That’s no small feat as anyone who’s familiar with the current music industry knows.  And this album may be his best creation yet.

Upon spinning What She Said multiple times you soon discover that picking a favorite track is difficult. They’re all good, they’re all catchy and deeper meanings are realized with each listen.  The album might seem a little too ‘poppy’ upon first glimpse, but dig deeper into the lyrics and the production and you will soon feel guilty for those premature thoughts.  There are the fantastic songs illustrating America’s political and environmental issues (as the album title and cover art allude to), but what really helps anchor the album are those songs that strike closer to home for the average american.  Songs dealing with death, love and estrangement transcend party lines and bring thoughts back to the basics of life and existence. It’s the collection of all the themes together that really lift the work to a higher level.  And as with all great albums the old cliche fits for the latest Gillen Jr release, ‘the whole is more than the sum of its parts’.
